Our Pastor

Introducing the Rev. Dr. Jerry Hurst and his wife Pam

I am married to Pamela Jean, and we have three grown children.  Two of our children are married and, from them, we have a granddaughter and a grandson.  Our children live in Seattle, San Antonio, and Tallahassee.

A native of North Carolina, I did my undergraduate work at St. Andrews Presbyterian College located on the eastern side of that state.

On graduation, and following a brief teaching stint in Pennsylvania, I enlisted in the Army OCS program and was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1968. My overseas assignment was South Korea.  It was while in Korea that I experienced God’s call to the ministry.  On my discharge, I enrolled in Union Theological Seminary (VA) and completed my Doctorate in Ministry (D.Min.) degree in 1974.

My most recent ministry “call” was in 2007 to be the Interim Associate General Presbyter for the Sierra Mission Partnership located in Sacramento, California.  The scope of this call meant extensive travel throughout northern California and all of Nevada in support of churches with the presbyteries of Sacramento, Stockton, and Nevada.

Prior to the California call, I served as the “new church development” pastor for Southminster Presbyterian Church in Missouri City, Texas.  In the 20 years that I served that church, we grew to over 700 members and became one of the first recipients of the Sam and Helen Walton Awards as an exemplary new church development.  All told, in my over 35 years of ministry, I have served churches in Arkansas, Florida and Texas.

I have been a commissioner to two General Assemblies (’81 and ’93) and served a term on the General Assembly’s Presbyteries’ Cooperative Committee in the writing and administering of ordination exams for those seeking to be pastors within the PC(USA).
